The 2009 Spring Turkey Season in WI has been for lack of better words rather lackluster. So many of the people I know have gone without birds this year mostly we all believe because bird numbers are simply down. Two harsh winters in a row have really taken their toll on the turkey population as well as more predators such as coyotes and raccoons have been decimating the turkey population.

After Kimberley and I hunted nearly all day on 5/22, and not having a single answer let alone even ...

I still get shaky just thinking about this.

Ernie (Bowbo) and I sat up on a fields edge and had our decoys about 25 yards out in the field. about an hour into the hunt we heard some gun fire.sounded like a 22 on the other side of the field and threw the woods. we figured it was just someone shotting at targets sense there was a house on the other side of the woods.

Then about another half hour went by and Ernie said, hey Mike there is the guy with the 22 and i look across the field ...

I was able to harvest a gobbler this past Saturday. Cody and I headed out to some 14,000 acres of state game lands, which is surrounded by 1,000's of acres of state forest. I knew the birds were in there from some preseason scouting and trail camera pics in the fall. I have been there before and have heard plenty of action in the early morning hours. As you all know, as the season has progressed, the birds seem to be keeping quiet all of the time for some reason.

The whole area was hit ...

Got up early this morning to make the trip back home for the last time this season. I was really looking forward to this hunt and had a good feeling about this morning. After Thursdays close encounters I decided that Tommy should make the trip with me as well to try and make those stubborn gobblers come into range.

Get to the property earlier than I have been getting there because I knew it was going to take some time to get back to the field I wanted to set up on and get Tommy and his ...

It has been a long season for the severson family. It all started during the 09 IA youth season with my 6 yr old practicing shooting a youth modle 870 for turkeys. He was a natural, right off the bat as he was practicing in the back yard shooting off of Dad's lap. He shot several times. Old dad had long been preparing for the day that his kids would join him hunting. In preparation several years ago, I purchased a fine, youth 870 and matched it with a ...

As soon as it started to lighten up Heard a gobbler sound off deep in the woods. I made the decision to try and close the distance. With the fog still thick I felt confident I could get closer without getting busted. Got deeper into the holler and sat down. Boom. One gobbler to the right 3 to my left.
I had a guy stop in the middle of the street about 5 min ago, and another guy stopped too, so I looked out the window, and the first guy pulled a Turkey out of his truck, so I had to check it out. So this guy is in his woods, and he is not turkey hunting, and sees this turkey struggling to walk, so he grabs a club out of his truck, and gets his turkey. WOW that is funny right there!! The turkey had 11 inch beard, and about 1 inch spurs. nice bird, I picked him up and I waould say he weighed ...

Than after that I am hitting the woods all day long. I had seen a smokey gray jelly head. He is a stud among turkeys. He has about a 11" beard that is thick. I hope to have some pic's when I get back.

Persistence pays off

The ‘09 season started out very exciting. I had a new TK2000 Knight Muzzle loader and a new, custom-made Foggy Holler long box call from Jerry Zebro in Ridgeland, WI. Second season, however, was not looking too good. Friday, I was able to leave work early enough for an evening hunt and to do some scouting. I was on my way up a huge hill to sit where three ridges come together when I saw a tom in full strut. He looked proud as he was pacing back and forth ...

I started by cutting away the big pieces of meat and fat on the front of the fan.

I flipped the fan around, and cut away the extra feathers and big hunks of fat and meat

I then begin cutting off the meat that is layered over the base of the fan

Once I got there I noticed several new no trespassing signs posted around the entrances. Not wanting to cause any problems I decided to skip my gobbler scouting and just drive around to see if I could spot any deer feeding in the late afternoon.
I read that this technique is cool, fun, and exciting!! You find where the Turks roost the night before season starts. Wait a few min to let them get settled, then sneak close to them once you are there, scream, stomp, and make as much noise as possible. To SCATTER THEM. Opening morning, go back to the area, set up, and they are to regroup together, and that is when you catch BIG TOM off guard. They say this is one of the best ways to seal the deal, they say it is exciting to see the madness. ...

My first hunt of the season, the gobblers where there , just at the other end of the huge field, could not get them worked in,

Donimate bird talked to me for over 2 hours - it was sweet, but something turned him , fun hunt but came home emty today

Can not get back out till the weekend and they are predicting heavy down pours for us- isn't that wonderful

Hubbie and I had a blast, tho
