I think you can get an idea of the deers age as far as being mature or a young buck from rubs, but as far as nailing it down to an actual age the only way I know of to know for sure is by examining their teeth.

Ya I agree with Joe on that also there is a size chart for deer tracks that can give you an idea of the age. It depends on the lenght of the track. I will have to see if i can find it. I read it in a outdoors magazine somewhere. Ofcourse im sure its not 100%

Can never tell for sure, but big mature bucks will often make rubs higher on trees, and on bigger trees. As far as tracks, bigger tracks are usually bigger deer, and one that's 3 1/2 inches wide is generally considered to be a big buck. So if its print is as wide as a 30.06 cartridge you probably have a shooter. Not that it can't be a monstrous doe, but probably a big buck.

It depends if you get a clean track size. Of course big track means heavy big body deer that is older.

The tracks would probably give you the best indication. As for rubs, I always look for trees around the rub to see if they got nicked up any while the deer was rubbing on the primary tree. That can give you some indication of the size of the rack, but not so much the age...

I was taught and have gone by this rule. Anything over 3 1/2 inches long from back of hoof to the tip of the hoof on a good track, is a mature buck. But thats just what I believe. drunken

If the droppings crunch in your mouth like crunchy peanut butter, it is a mature buck... if they are soft and chewy like milk duds, it is just a young buck lol!

Ok... sorry for being a tool... Basically everyone else already used the good info.
