PostSubject: New muzzleloader   Wed Feb 10, 2010 3:25 pm

Hey all just purchased my first muzzleloader yesterday. I bought the TC Omega z5 28" barrel with weather shield has the thumb hole stock in realtree HD. Bought it from dicks for 369.99 it was on sale 100.00 dollars off. I bought the bushnell Xlt trophy doa muzzleloading scope with the leupold qd mounts and rings, through midway USA. As I said be fore this is my first muzzleloader so if any of y'all can point me in the right direction with bullets and charges, and grains and brands for each. I know I have to use the 209 primers. I am predominantly and going to use the gun for deer and boar if that makes and difference. Look forward to hearing from y'all. Thanks. Mike-

Nice setup! There are several folks who hunt with that gun on here. One thing to check, if your scope has the bdc it is probably for magnum loads, 150 grains. 3 50gr pyrodex pellets and a 250gr shockwave sabot seems to be the ideal recipe, I know Robert and Dave both have this gun so they can correct me if they use something else. Pyrodex or 777 works well, just stay away from that Shockey's powder, very erratic.

I do have that gun and use 150 grains of 777 and Hornady SST sabot slugs. It's a good gun out past 200 yards if you put the time in to shoot it. Keep the barrel clean and you are good to go. A lot of deer killed with mine by not only me but a few friends as well. I went with the Nikon Omega scope though. It matched the gun

Yeah, you'll be very happy with it. Congrats on a fine purchase! I use 150 grains of pellets and a 250 grain T/C Shockwave Superglide Sabot. Good luck with it!

That's the same load I use and it shoots great. I use my TC muzz for all our gun seasons.

You can find some good deals on ebay once in a while for accessories, also.

Gander, Dicks, Cabela's and Bass Pro all carry a good selection of extra stuff plus local gun stores and some online sites as well. Been hunting with mine for about 5 years and what has been helpful to me is a cleaning rod, ball started(a must have) and some speed loaders. I can reload incredibly fast with a speed loader tube. I carry three on me all the time and sometimes six. Never hurts to have extra's. Also will want some black powder solvent and a breach plug pick and cleaner. Oh and some gorilla grease or something similar. If that plug freezes you'll never get it out. I always use a bunch of that on the threads. Best of luck to you though and you are going to love hunting with it. Such a great shooting gun

Congrats on the new gun! You have gotten some great advice here, but I would like to mention 1 other thing. They sell Pyrodex and 777 in a pelleted form as well as loose. The pellets are more convenient, but some guns are more accurate if you use the loose powder and measure the charges. As you probably know, black powder and it's substitutes are measured by volume instead of by weight like smokeless. If you decide to try this, buy a powder measure. Personally, I just use the pellets. They are normally accurate enough.

One other thing. Find the load you are going to use. Seat the bullet firmly on the powder charge; but don't crush the pellets if you use them. Then mark your ramrod somehow. Then you can drop it down the barrel and visually check to see if everything is as it should be. Sometimes folks will forget to put powder or a bullet in; or they don't get it seated properly. With this thought in mind, never leave all your tools at home. You might have to make an in-field disassembly.
Always, pop a couple of primers before loading to ensure there isn't a stoppage and the nipple is clear. Notice, I said BEFORE loading. You can point the barrel at a dry leaf of tuft of grass. If it moves, everything is clear.

    Wow! I got long-winded here.
