What a great opening day for the youth season, A couple of buddies and I took ny son (ricky) and another youth out for the youth opener.
Started out rainy than just tappered off right before daybreak My son and I and one of my buddies set up in a ground bline just off a field edge which we could not get close to due to a flooded creek. and my other buddy and his son went to the oppesite end of the field and set up.
As i was setting up the decoys my buddy said look is that a turkey in that tree and sure enough it was a tom not 80 yards from us but on the other side of the creek and right on the field edge. so as day started breaking he started gobbleing up in the tree. he stayed up in the tree well after daybreak just a gobbleing and struting the whole time. next thing we saw was a hen come flying down right out in the field and he went down after her. we called and called at him but she done had him locked down and they just walked away. so we sat there alittle while longer with nothing else happening. we all stepped out of the blind to streatch the legs and to releave ourselfs. as we were standing the my buddy said ill run up here to this other field just top of the hill and see if there is anything in it. as he tops the hill i see him come running back down so i knew there were turkey out there. so we hurried up and grabbed a few things and headed up to the field. we saw to turkey out there about 300 years away so we got set up on a fence row and started calling and sure enough here they come it ended up being 3 Jakes so i told ricky that he didnt have to shoot one if he didnt want to but he said heck yeah ill shoot one.so we got ready and as the first two come by they were pretty close together so he wanted to wait and get the 3rd one not to shoot and hit 2 of them so when the 3rd one stepped out my buddy let out a yelp and the jake stuck his head way up and I didnt have to say a word and KA-Boom down he goes at 30 yrds.
And as for the other youth as we were setting up on rickies bird we heard him shoot, not knowing if he got it or not. after we got rickies bird and got back to the truck we saw them coming up the field edge.
and boy did he get his turkey too and what a great bird as well it was 25lbs 10 inch beard and had 1 3/8" spurs (30mm). and was his first bird ever.
Rickys bird was 16lbs 2 inch beard and no spurs.
Both boys had thier birds by 9 oclock. it was a fast day but a great one aswell. congrats to both young men.
