Backcountry hunting Empty
PostSubject: Backcountry hunting   Backcountry hunting EmptyMon Oct 04, 2010 3:06 pm

I recently returned from hunting the MT backcountry on a 10 day wilderness drop camp. Had a great time out there breaking the ice on a new season. Killed my best bull to date and a decent mulie for the area.

I ended up filling the mulie tag first. It was a long day of ridge running covering lots of ground peaking over edges from side to side. As dusk set in we found two decent bucks bedded about a mile west and 1200' up from camp. We tried to double up but fell short on the other buck. I was fortunate to make a 100 yard running (bouncing actually) shot on this one.

The bulls didn't seem to want to be bothered. I ended up chasing this one down and putting a stalk on. They were in thick timber where you could barely see 30 yards. I could smell him before I was able to see him, then that was only a big tan spot through the brush. I think he winded me and spun to take off when I seen he was a legal bull and took the shot. He only went a few paces before piling up. The next day there was a set of grizz tracks heading up the trail that way. I'll tell ya that gets a little nerve racking.

I know you guys are all about the whitetails but I just can't get hunting the Rockies out of my mind. Camp was 14 miles from the trailhead in the vast Bob Marshall wilderness. With only primitive travel allowed it's a demanding hunt that's rewarding weather you score or not in the end.

What a great time. Great photos and Congrats to you. I know what you mean about the experience even if you end up not bagging something. I spent 10 days in the Route National Forest in Colorado for 10 days and wow. Great job buddy.

Thanks all, it's a first for me to come home with a buck and a bull on the same trip. It was also my buddies first elk hunt and he tagged a 5x6 bull the first day out. It took us till the 8th day to get on my bull. Had a black bear tag also but cutting a set of track was the closest we got. That's just as well as the meat box and coolers were max'ed out anyhow. rendeer

That is a fantastic hunt! That mulie is a big mature buck and nice bull also! What gun were you shooting? That looks like a hunt of a lifetime, are you planning on going back next year? If so, I'll start planning now.

I used my M77 in 7mm mag, that's my favorite all round shooter and I've always done good with it. Perfect for the game I was after, it's the game I wasn't after is where I felt undergunned. I hunted the other end of this wilderness in 2007. I was messing with my GPS in camp, the bull I shot there last time was marked 61 miles away. It's big country out there. Cool

As for next year, I need to keep it cheap so not likely with an outfitted drop camp again. I have a lead on horses and my own gear to DIY it as I normally do. I'll have to see what's up as tag time approaches. Still have a few months to figure something out.

I would also like to hear more about next year, if your open to having more on a trip? I also have limited funds, so self guided hunt would be best. Also, need info on tags, etc, etc.......

Been on the bucket list for a long time, and I'm not gettin any younger, plus I'm due to deploy again Jan 2012, this will be my 3rd high tempo combat deployment, its like spinning the chamber of a revolver if you know what I mean.

MT applications need to be in March 15 most years. Drop camps are self guided, they just haul you and your gear in/out of one of their camps. With renting horses I'd say you could get away with half that cost but you'll burn some labor on it. It's still way to early for me to make plans.....after the new year.

Recon, you're absolutely correct, you're not getting any younger. Sounds like you may want to get that off the bucket list in 2011. Let me know. Thanks for the service!
