| Well all season i had been seeing big deer 2 deer that would have easily grossed in the 190s or better on 2 of the other farms i hunt, i hunt around 10 or 11 different properties, i passed up a bunch of great deer last year including a pair of 140 class deer. it came down to the last weekend of muzzleloader and we had saved this property until that weekend we went and checked it out the night before and we saw him running with a group of does so we backed out and came back in the next morning, It was around 15 degrees out and there was almost a foot of snow on the ground. at first light 2 does came out to the field me and my friend were sitting on and he took a shot at one at around 150 yards and missed, we were talking about how i should have shot one of the 140s in bow season when i had them both broadside at 15 yards in shooting lanes, and then i look out into the field and he was standing broadside at 55 yards and i was in shock, i said oh shit and as i pull up on him and shoot my firend barely had time to look up before i shot, he looks at me and asks me how big do you think he was and i was like oh probably 140s or so, we only got to see him for about 20 seconds tops, and he looks at me and is like no way he is a lot bigger than that. so we wait an hour or so and i called my dad to tell him i had shot a good buck, and he tells me to call him back when i get to him. Well we get down after an hour and go to look for him and we jump another buck that was around the same size that was running with him and we ended up jumping him out of his bed, so we gave him four more hours or so, then come back and bumped him up agian. so we gave him a few more hours and finally got up on him, i came around a brush pile and there he was he went to stand up and i sat him back down at 10 yards. i look at him and just completely lost it i couldnt get myself together enough to reload i had to have my fried load for me, i go to him and hold him up and could believe i was finally putting my hands on him, i couldnt believe how big he was, We get him back to the truck and get a scoring tape and calculate his score and he grossed 170 3/8 inches. That hunt proved to me that holding out for a big deer pays off, because over the past 5 or 6 years i have always held off on taking a shot at a buck until i got a shot at a big enough one and mature enough deer , everyone told me i was stupid for it until i brought him home, nobody had belived me i saw deer that big until they saw him or went hunting with me. I will never forget that day for the rest of my life. Also it made the 500 miles of driving every single weekend to come home to deer hunt worth it. I drove 200 miles home and 200 back to and from school every single weekend deer season was in this year i didnt miss a weekend. I would leave college as soon as class got out to go home to hit the woods. All of the time spent paid off with that deer. | |
