I was very fortunate to have a great season this year. I was tagged out in KS before even seeing the rut!
It all happened on a warm 70* day. I was sitting in my stand and the action was slow. REAL SLOW! I was actually popping bark off the tree with a pocket knife when I know I shouldn't have. It was getting dark and quick. With probably ten minutes of light left, I heard some footsteps in the leaves and put the knife up. When I looked back, I saw what I though was a shooter buck. It was very much dusk and the dark timber didn't help. I noticed rather long G2s so I prepared to shoot. I ranged the projected lane he would walk in and it came in 27 yards. He kept walking and I drew back. The buck stopped in my lane like on a script and turned his head to lick himself or something. That's when I noticed how big he really was.
I jammed that thought out of my head and settled in for the shot. Thud! The arrow, unknown to me at the time, flew very true. He ran off into darkness. I regained myself and called a friend that helps me track my deer. I then climbed down to meet with him. After a quick trip to town for lanterns, we got on the blood trail. Problem was, we couldn't find one. Initially, there was no blood. But, after 20 minutes we found blood 15 yards to the north and then the two pieces of the arrow. The arrow showed some very good blood. We picked up the blood trail and followed it for another 25-30 yards when we found my trophy! Turned out to be a perfect double lung shot and he ran about 40 yards!!!
