Well there isnt much of a story because it happened so fast. but a couple buddies and I decided to head back to camp for a days hunt figureing that down there was our best chance of scoreing on a bird. so we get up at 2:30 in the moring and head to camp in south western IN. we arive down there at 5:00 and get to the DNR station to get our daily tag. they do a drawing for 12 ppl to hunt on 5000 acres.but only 7 hunters show up.
We get our tag and head to our spot< we all decided to split up to better our chances. BowBo decided to head east because that is where he got his turkey last year. and me and my other buddy head west to a freshly planted corn field, I get set up in the first corner of the field and my buddy headed south to the other end of the field.
I got set up around 6:15 and it was already starting to break day light. I snuggled in a bush about 7 to 8 yards of the field edge. the wind was blowing very hard and i knew i wouldnt hear any gobbling going on. about 6:45 I was getting ready to make a few calls to let anything arond know i was there. but out of the corner of my eye(to my left) i see a hen come out into the field about 30 yrds from me.she came out into the field and started feeding. so i was sitting as still as i could so she wouldnt see me. then out of the other corner of my eye i see another hen come out but to my right and she was only about 15 yrds away. so i was watching her and she was feeding at the edge and comeing right in front of me and i can here the other hen clucking at her next thing i know the first hen is 10 feet from me to my left comeing the the 2nd hen. they both are right in front of me feeding about 10 yrds away.(getting nervous now thinking they are going to bust me at anytime) as i was watching them trying to be as still as a rock i see another hen come out in front of me from where the 2nd hen came from and then another hen came out so now i got 4 hens in front of me feedeing.they start feeding out to the midle of the field so i take a look over to where the 3 three hen came out and BAM they he is standing in the weeds just a strutting. hen struts out into the field and then he noticed my jake decoy (which is to my left and he is to my right) he comes strutting to my decoy and he has to cross right in front of me and i dont have my gun all the way up yet
so as he was strutting in front of me he turns and looks right at me
thought i was busted but he turned his head right back to the decoy and was going in for the fight. as he passed me i was able to get my gun sholdered and the red dot right on his woddles at this time he came out of strut so i let him have it at 15 yrds away and down he goes
He wieghed in at 22.5 pounds
10 1/2" beard
and both spurs were 7/8" long
Its been a long hard season dint think I was going to score but it came together at the end
