This story starts a few years back. In 2009 I suggested to my dad that we needed to clearcut an area on our farm to make a "Sanctuary" for the deer to bed in. This was going to be an area where we hardly ever entered and an area that hopefully would become extremely thick and the deer would feel comfortable in. Well on January 1 2010 me and dad made our "Sanctuary". We cut most of the trees in roughly a 2 acre spot in some of our bottom ground. We took special care in cutting the trees as to not cut all the way through them. We tried to leave some of the bark attached to the trees so they would stay alive and provide browse as well as bedding.
Well on November 23 2011 our hardwork finally paid off with my dad taking a stud buck in the "Sanctuary".
My dad has hunted as hard this year as I had ever known him to hunt. He had a close call last week with a good buck but hadn't been able to close the deal. Well that all changed a few days ago when he decided to hunt the "Sanctuary". He was in a ladder stand on the outside of the "Sanctuary" looking in. Dad slipped into this stand around 3:00 p.m., at 4:15 he called me and told me he had just shot a big buck. I went over to help him and quickly found the buck. He had double lunged him and the deer went a mere 50yds. Getting this deer out of our tangled mess was not the easiest. I like to never maneuvered the four wheeler through our manmade thicket to get him out.
I am extremely happy for my dad as this buck is sure to be his 5th Hoosier Record Book Buck. What an accomplishment. CONGRATS DAD!
I haven't had time to score him yet but I think he will be in the mid 150s or maybe a little bigger. It sure feels good for one of my family members to reap the rewards of our hardwork.
