On November 28th Fullrut and myself headed out to Kansas for the rifle season that opened on November 30th. We wanted to get there plenty early so we would have time to scout some private ground Ebrown and Fullrut had obtained permission to hunt while we were out there last year.
Wednesday, November 30th dawned clear and cold. Fullrut dropped me off and I began my 15 minute walk to the area we had selected while scouting. I arrived at my spot about 40 minutes before daylight but soon realized I couldn't get exactly in the spot I thought I could and still have clear shooting.
This area was a 3 acre corn stubble field located in the middle of a wooded drainage. Shortly after sunrise I had a nice buck come through but I was not able to get a shot due to brush. Feeling kind of sick that I didn't get a shot on this buck, I glassed the area around the field decided I needed to change locations to take advantage of the range of my Remington 270 rifle.
I quickly repositioned 100yds east but had no choice but to take up a hiding spot on the ground but I did have the sun at my back. I soon had 3 does come through yet I remained undetected which gave me encouragement. Soon afterward 4 more does came through. At 8:45am I roared and grunted with my Double S grunt tube. At 8:50pm I glanced to my right and saw a buck approaching from about 125 yds. At a glance I knew this was a shooter buck for me and slowly raised my rifle.
He was approaching straight toward me from downwind and it crossed my mind that he could spook at any second but he continued to come in 100, 75, 50. He then stopped and tuned quartering so I decided to fire. The buck dropped straight down and hardly even kicked.
I rough scored him at 150 1/8"
